丂丂 丂丂2-3. The causes of the global food problem |
| |
|
What causes the global food problem? All of the factors influencing the system of the food production, consumption and distribution shown in the orange box in Chart 4 below cause the global food problem. The world population grows steadily every year. In some developing countries, the economic level rises, meat consumption increases, and the amount of grain used as livestock feed also grows. Because of the increase in bioethanol production, the amount of grain used as raw material for it increases. As a result of these things, the total consumption of grain in the world increases steadily every year. On the other hand, grain production has ups and downs. One area乫s grain production may decrease due to droughts or floods. Because there is lack of farmland and water and farming intensiveness has limitations, we cannot increase world grain production as much as we hope. Some countries intentionally reduce harvests in order to stabilize their agricultural industries. Total world grain production goes up and down, production is catching up with consumption, and the balance between the two is being maintained so far. However, while grain
consumption continues growing, grain prices are also increasing. Droughts and floods happen at anywhere in the world almost every year. There are some prolonged wars and conflicts in the world. As the result of these factors as well as Increase in grain prices, unfortunately, even though many people are working
very hard to make poverty reduce, the number of people suffering from food
shortages has been increasing for last 10 years.

| Also, there are many different problems behind these factors, such as environmental issues, energy issues, economic and financial issues, racial and historical issues, and human rights issues. The loss of forests lowers the amount of water kept in the land, and increases
the damage caused by typhoon. Due to the influence of climate changes caused by global warming, there
have been more floods in Asia, and drought damage is spreading in Africa.
The financial crisis made grain prices soar in 2008. South Korea and North Korea used to be one
nation, but why is it that only the people in the North are starving? Is the policy of controlling population
growth compatible with the human rights of couples who want to have babies and
build a happy family? |
